Welcome to the fabulous year 5!

The adult in our class are:

• Zara O’Driscoll (Class Teacher)

This week the school have been continuing their efforts to show that Robert Blair is not only a school, it is part of the wider community – after all, Our School is Our Classroom, Our City is Our School.

Our topic this half term is Amazonia!

Please review our knowledge organiser below.

This week, the children have been delighting in the sunshine while exploring the school’s garden areas as part of their studies on Amazonian biomes. They have been eagerly examining the diverse flora and fauna, drawing comparisons to the lush, vibrant ecosystem of the Amazon rainforest. This hands-on experience has brought their classroom lessons to life, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the incredible biodiversity of one of the world’s most vital and captivating biomes.

The children have also enjoyed looking at the importance of sustainability as they prepare for their literacy work on writing a persuasive letter to the president of Brazil urging them to introduce greener policies and reduce deforestation.

Literacy

This week, the Year 5s have been passionately crafting persuasive letters aimed at raising awareness about the critical issue of deforestation. Through their writing, they are learning how to effectively present arguments, use emotive language, and structure their letters to persuade their readers. By addressing real-world environmental concerns, such as the impact of deforestation on the Amazon rainforest, our children are not only developing their literacy skills but also becoming more informed and engaged global citizens.

Maths

This week, the Year 5s have been diving into the world of negative numbers as part of their maths curriculum. The students have been exploring the concept of numbers below zero, learning how to compare, order, and perform basic arithmetic operations with negative values. Through a variety of engaging activities and practical examples, they have developed a strong understanding of how negative numbers are used in real-life contexts, such as temperatures and financial calculations.
